Summer Research Internships

Summer vacation projects are a unique opportunity to gain valuable research experience during the summer semester through a formal or informal internship. You will spend up to 8 weeks working alongside scientists with international reputations in their research disciplines. This is a unique opportunity to experience "a world class research environment" as an undergraduate student.

Your options are:

  • Apply for participation in SCIE3044 Vacation Project.
Your summer vacation project can be completed with a scientist at UQ, one of its collaborative institutions or outside of UQ. You are encouraged to find your own supervisors by approaching scientists in your area of interest. However, if you are interested in working outside UQ you must to contact the Course Coordinator for advice.

Projects are available through the following Schools in the Faculty of Biological & Chemical Sciences:
School of Biomedical Sciences
School of Integrative Biology
School of Molecular & Microbial Sciences
There are also science projects available in other schools and institutes.
School of Geography, Planning & Architecture
School of Information Technology & Electrical Engineering
School of Physical Sciences
School of Psychology

Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) - three year summer internship program providing career mentoring and laboratory research skills.
CRC Sugar Industry Innovation - a six week Vacation Research Internship.
Institute for Molecular Biosciences (IMB)
Queensland Brain Institute (QBI)

Who is eligible?

Students currently enrolled in a second or third level of their program at UQ OR outside UQ (ie at another university) are eligible. Students who have already graduated will need to contact the Course Coordinator (see below).

In SCIE3044 you will investigate a 'real' research project under close supervision of an experienced scientist. This will give you a unique opportunity to develop core research skills relevant to a wide spectrum of scientific research, including written and oral communication, research skills in the selected discipline, and recording and analysing data. Theresearch project is conducted during the Summer Semester (6-8 weeks) under the direction of a UQ supervisor approved by the Director of Studies. Projects are possible in all scientific disciplines including: Anatomy, Developmental Biology, Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Ecology, Geological Science, Geographical Science, Mathematics, Microbiology & Parasitology, Neuroscience, Physics, Physiology, Pharmacology, Zoology & Entomology. Click for a list of available projects.

A detailed profile can be found at the SCIE3044 website. All students who wish to participate in SCIE3044 must complete the steps listed in the Application Process above.

If you are a CURRENT UQ student your supervisor needs to apply for you to participate in SCIE3044 HERE. If your supervisor is not a UQ staff member please contact the Course Coordinator for further information.
