Welcome to the Faculty of Biological and Chemical Sciences.  The Faculty embraces some of the key areas of science for the 21st century and takes great pride in its undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs.  Our Schools and Centres range from the study of chemistry through molecular and cellular biology, whole organism biology of animals, plants and micro-organisms, to studies of ecology and the environment.  We have great strength in biomedical sciences (physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, biochemistry and microbiology), in materials and biological chemistry, in molecular plant science, in environmental science and ecology. We also manage the University's exciting Biotechnology Program  covering the industrial and commercial applications of our research in chemistry and biology.

Our aim is to provide an exciting selection of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level covering these areas, taught by staff members who are undertaking research projects of high international standard.  We aim to prepare graduates capable of addressing all types of scientific problem in a systematic way, informed by the literature and by a strong grounding in laboratory experimentation.  A number of programs also offer significant field work experiences in both the terrestrial and marine environments. All of our Science students have the opportunity of an undergraduate research experience in their third year of study and our Honours year is dominated by a major individual research project.  We also have a large cohort of PhD and M Phil students who are undertaking a wide range of exciting research projects.  Science is by its nature international and we encourage our students to gain international experience and welcome to our courses and programs many students from around the world.

Our Faculty comprises three Schools and two Major Centres as described below.  We also have strong linkages at both teaching and research level with all of the other faculties in the University as well as the three major research Institutes, the Institute for Molecular Biosciences, the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and the Queensland Brain Institute.
